The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) has initiated the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to analyze the potential environmental consequences of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation’s (Nation’s) application for a proposed 129-acre fee-to-trust transfer and gaming facility project in DeKalb County, just southeast of the town of Shabbona, IL. The property is comprised of two parcels, a 128-acre parcel currently used for farming (Parcel ID Index 13-23-200-001), on which the gaming facility would be built, and a 30,020 square foot parcel on which a house sits (Parcel ID Index 13-23-128-002). For the purpose of the EIS, the BIA will serve as the Lead Agency for compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
The BIA issued a Notice of Intent on January 6, 2016, which opened public scoping to identify potential issues, concerns, and alternatives to be considered in the EIS. Written comments on the scope of the EIS were due by February 22, 2016.
A public scoping meeting on the project was held on January 26, 2016 at the Jenkins Auditorium at the Kishwaukee College Conference Center, located at 21193 Malta Road in Malta, IL.
